Common Exterior Home Painting Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Every homeowner wants a fresh and classy look for their home’s exterior, so they decide to paint. After applying the paint, you get the results.

Suppose the results are not satisfactory; then we will be able to identify the small mistakes we made during the painting. Exterior home painting is not only about brush and paint, but it is also a proper process.

The following points will inform you about common mistakes people make when painting the exterior of their homes and how to avoid them.

1. Ignoring Surface Preparation

The most common and the biggest mistake is not preparing the surface. Many people apply paint directly to dusty, old painted floors in the presence of moisture; as a result, the paint does not adhere properly. To remedy this, clean the surface and remove the grease and dirt. If the wall is damp, let it dry first. Apply a primer coat so that the paint remains smooth and long-lasting. The result can be destroyed by ignoring this easy step.

2. Choosing the Wrong Type of Paint

Every surface requires a different type of paint. Many people use interior paints on exterior walls, which is one of the wrong approaches. The exterior home painting is specifically designed to withstand sunlight, rain, and dust. If you choose the wrong type of paint, it will start cracking and peeling off after some time. Always check the label for exterior use. Use weather-resistant paint for moisture-prone areas. Buy good-quality, costly items for long-term use.

3. Painting in the Wrong Weather Conditions

People usually ignore this thing, and they paint the exterior walls in the wrong weather conditions. Painting in extreme rainy weather will not dry quickly, and painting in summer will result in uneven paint. Always paint in moderate temperatures. It is recommended to avoid the rainy season, as this can result in the paint bubbling. The early morning and the mid-afternoon are best for painting. Choosing the correct type of weather is a professional practice.

4. Skipping the Primer Coat

Primer plays a specific and crucial role, and skipping it is one of the most common mistakes in painting. Without primer, the paint looks uneven, and the old color of the wall becomes visible. Primer gives a better finish and grip. Always apply one coat of primer before painting. The paint color looks shiny with the primer. A good primer can double the life span of the paint.

5. Not Using the Right Tools

Using the old rollers and a cheap brush is also one of the biggest mistakes. They give uneven strokes and a streaky finish. Use high-quality synthetic brushes and thick rollers for exterior walls. Use angled brushes for corners, and clean the tools after each use. A quality brush holds paint better and delivers cleaner lines.

6. Applying Only One Coat of Paint

Many people think that only one coat is enough, but applying one coat results in uneven coverage and does not prevent the paint from fading. Always use two coats for a smooth and durable finish. Wait 4-6 hours for the first coat to dry, and then apply the second coat after the first coat has dried. The double coats make the colour rich, and you can get more protection.

Exterior home painting is an art that needs patience, preparation, and planning. The small mistakes, such as incorrect paint selection, no primer, and incorrect weather conditions. Avoid these mistakes to keep your home looking its best for years.
